Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Jefferson police department:
Monday, June 30: At 4:09 am a complainant requested an officer at a residence in the 300 block of W. Head Street for a domestic disturbance between a male and female. The female was reported to have been screaming, yelling and attempting to set a bed on fire. The female was trespassed from the property. At 7:27 am a domestic disturbance was reported at a residence in the 700 block of N. Cedar St; the dispute was a continuance of the earlier call. The caller reported a male chasing a female around the residence with a butcher’s knife in his hand. The couple was reported to be leaving the property at the time of the call. The male was located on the Union Pacific railroad tracks west of the Cedar Street crossing. Jacob Arther Ore, 36, of Jefferson was arrested and charged with domestic abuse – assault, public intoxication, disorderly conduct and trespass, all simple misdemeanors*. At 5:40 pm a complainant reported harassment by a known female. The officer warned both parties that any further contact with each other would result in criminal charges being filed. At 6 pm a complainant reported harassment that was occurring on Facebook. The officer advised the complainant to block the sender. The officer also contacted the accused and advised to end contact or criminal charges would be considered.
Sunday, June 29: At 6:32 pm a complainant reported harassment by a male at a residence in the 700 block of N Cedar St. Pursuant to a driving complaint in the 500 block of N. Elm Street on June 23, warrants have been issued charging David Troy Upchurch, 36, of Jefferson, with disorderly conduct, reckless driving and driving while revoked*.

Friday, June 27: At 2:37 pm an officer was requested at a residence in the 400 block of E. Garfield St for a report of a possible identity theft.
Thursday, June 26: At 8:28 pm a complainant reported the theft of a maroon Fuji mountain bike from outside The Printer’s Box.
Wednesday, June 25: At 11:11 am an officer investigated a traffic collision at Maple and Clark Streets. Paige Brown was eastbound on Clark Street. Theresa Lawson was northbound on Maple St. The vehicles collided in the uncontrolled intersection. Brown was cited for failure to yield to the vehicle on the right. Damage to her 2012 Fiat Sport was estimated at $1,000. Damage to Lawson’s 2011 Chevrolet Travers was also estimated at $1,000. At 11:28 am a complainant reported the theft of medication from a residence in the 600 block of W. Adams Street. The theft was reported to have taken place on June 21. An investigation was initiated. At 1:38 pm a complainant reported an assault that occurred at a residence in the 400 block of N. Cedar St on June 23. An investigation was initiated. At 1:43 pm the Greene County sheriff’s office reported criminal mischief to a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe which had occurred at an unknown location. The headlight and bumper had been spray painted. At 2:52 pm a resident reported a tree branch had fallen on a power line causing it to spark at 701 N. Cedar Street. The officer secured the area until Alliant Energy arrived. At 3:41 pm an officer took a report of criminal mischief where a vehicle had torn up some dirt on the lot at E. Adams and N. Wilson Streets. At 4:02 pm a complainant reported a burglary and theft of prescription medication from a residence in the 1100 block of N. Cedar Street. An investigation was initiated. At 9:23 pm staff at Dollar General reported a shoplifting incident. It remains under investigation.

Monday, June 23: At 10:05 am officers assisted the sheriff’s office with a personal injury accident on Highway 4 south of Jefferson at the Raccoon River bridge. (See sheriff’s report for details.) At 11:29 pm a complainant reported a black Camaro being driven in a reckless manner in the 700 block of N. Cedar St. The incident remains under investigation.
Sunday, June 22: At 5:11 am an officer responded to the report of a fire at 1216 Westwood Drive, Apt. 2. The fire was contained to the living room area. A cigarette was believed to have caught a mattress on fire. The apartment was a total loss due to fire and smoke damage. At 11:24 pm an officer was advised a vehicle had struck a tree at 807 N. Wilson Street. Upon the officer’s arrival the driver was not present and there signs that someone had been injured. The driver, Trinity Welch, later returned and stated he had dropped a cigarette while driving and when he had bent down to pick it up, he was about to leave the roadway. The driver overcorrected causing his vehicle to strike the tree. The driver was transported by Greene County Emergency Medical Services to the Greene County Medical Center for injuries sustained in the collision. Welch was cited for failure to maintain control and Driving while license suspended. The 2002 Mercury Sable owned by Kathryn Welch sustained damage that exceeded the vehicle’s value.

Thursday, June 19: A complainant reported cattle in her yard in the 200 block of Hillrose Lane. The owner of the livestock was contacted to retrieve them.
Wednesday, June 18: At 1:46 am a parent requested an officer at a residence in the 700 block of Pinet Place as her juvenile son was going to run away. Officers were advised that her two sons were now on the ground outside in a physical struggle. The officer arrived and learned that the juvenile had run from the area. A short time later the officer located the juvenile, who attempted to run from the officer. James Pena, 16, of Jefferson was placed into custody and brought to the Greene County LEC. Juvenile charges of assault – serious and interference with official acts were given to the Juvenile Court. Pena will also be cited for, curfew violation.* Pena was later transported to juvenile detention in Clarinda. At 9:13 am a complainant reported items missing from his residence at in the 600 block of South Cedar Street. The officer is investigating.
Tuesday, June 17: At 12:36 am Melanie Wahl reported a tree had fallen on her neighbor’s cars and possibly her house. A tree from 304 N. Locust St. had fallen and landed at 302 N. Locust, striking three cars and the residence. The first vehicle, a 1998 Buick LeSabre owned by Alexander Hamilton, sustained approximately $2,000 in damage to the hood. A 2000 Saturn SL2, also owned by Alex Hamilton, sustained an estimated $3,000 in damage, including a crushed top. A third vehicle, a 2005 Dodge Neon owned by Pam Hamilton, sustained an estimated $5,000 in damage with the top crushed. Damage to a rain gutter on the house was estimated at $1,000. At 12:56 am a complainant reported a tree on a vehicle in the 500 block of W. Lincoln Way. A tree from Duane and Brenda Onken’s yard had fallen on their Dodge Journey, which was parked in the street. Damage to the hood, door and windshield was estimated at $4,000. At 3 am a resident reported a low hanging branch in the 500 block of S. Elm St. The officer contacted the Iowa DOT, as Elm St is a state highway. At 9:33 am a complainant reported a theft from her vehicle and residence in the 400 block of N. Chestnut St. She reported a credit card and prescription medications missing. The officer is investigating. At 2:35 pm a complainant reported her phone stolen from the Jefferson public library. She reported she left her phone on a table for approximately 20 minutes, and when she returned the phone was gone. The officer is investigating. At 6:36 pm an officer responded to the Greene County Medical Center emergency room for a patient who had injuries resulting from an argument. The officer is investigating.
Monday, June 16: At 5:45 pm officers and Jefferson fire department provided traffic control in the 300 block of S. Vine St. for a tree that had broken off and was resting on power lines. Alliant Energy arrived to the scene and removed the tree from the power lines. At 7:43 pm an officer was called to the area of the 700 block of S. Chestnut St. for an intoxicated individual walking around. The officer did not immediately locate the individual. At 10:10 pm a resident reported a tree in the roadway of the 100 block of N. West Street. The officer provided traffic control until a city employee arrived to open a lane of travel. At 11:17 pm an officer was checking on the parks in town when he located the individual who was reported as intoxicated earlier at Russell Park. The woman was sleeping on a picnic table. The officer arrested Jennifer Wendy Gohn-Chavez for public intoxication- second offense (serious misdemeanor).*
Sunday, June 15: While providing security at the beverage garden in the 200 Block of N. Wilson, officers arrested Kaitlyn Mary Hernandez, 21 of Panora for public intoxication and interference with official acts*.
Saturday, June 14: While providing security for the beverage garden in the 200 Block of N Wilson Ave, officers arrested Mark James Hurley, 49, of Jefferson for public intoxication- second offense and urinating in public. At 9:35 am a JPD officer assisted the Jefferson fire department with a vehicle on fire on County Road E-53 east of Jefferson. The officer provided a fire extinguisher to put the vehicle fire out while the fire department responded. At 5 pm a complainant reported the theft of items from an unlocked vehicle in the 200 block of S. Walnut Street. The event remains under investigation. At 2:05 pm a complainant reported a gap in the concrete at the N. Cedar St. railroad crossing. The gap was in the traveled portion of the roadway. The UPRR was contacted and advised of the issue. At 3:31 pm an officer took a report of a stolen bicycle at Greene County Community Center. At 3:44 pm a complainant reported criminal mischief to his vehicle in the 200 block of S. Vine St.

Thursday, June 12: At 5:13 am a complainant reported teenagers in violation of curfew at Kelso Park. At 3:34 pm an officer investigated a personal injury accident at The Gardens. Arthur Toyne pulled into a parking stall and backed up to reposition his vehicle. The officer believes that when Toyne shifted to go forward again, the throttle on his 1999 Pontiac Bonneville stuck. The vehicle went over the parking stop, broke off a handicap parking sing, and then struck a pillar just east of the front doors. Toyne then reversed the vehicle. It proceeded south through the parking lot, striking a parked 2011 Ford Fusion owned by Duane Young. Young’s car was pushed out of the parking lot and turned sideways in the grass between the parking lot and the road. Toyne’s vehicle continued southbound. It struck a roll off dumpster and continued southeast until it struck a curb. At that time Toyne was able to stop the vehicle. Toyne was transported by Greene County EMS to Greene County Medical Center for evaluation of possible injuries. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $2,500. Damage to Young’s vehicle was estimated at $7,000. Damage to the building was estimated at $3,000.

Tuesday, June 10: At 11:35 am a complainant requested an officer at a residence in the 1000 block E. Lincoln Way. The residence had been entered and property had been thrown about and broken while no one was home. The incident remains under investigation. At 1:18 pm an officer was asked to pick up an abandoned bicycle from a residence in the 700 block of W. Harrison St.
Monday, June 9: At 2:30 pm a complainant reported hearing what sounded like two gunshots and witnessed two juveniles in the area of Chautauqua Park behind a row of trees. The officer is following up on the complaint. At 11:34 pm an officer picked up a bicycle found in Russell Park.
Sunday, June 8: At 7:56 pm a complainant reported a neglected dog at a residence in the 500 block of W. Lincoln Way. The dog had been locked in an enclosed porch and not fed or watered for a few days. The officer contacted the owner who voluntarily surrendered the dog. It was taken to the animal shelter. At 8:48 pm Caseys (N. Elm) reported a gas drive off in the amount of $44.66 by a male wearing a tie dye shirt driving a blue Malibu. Pursuant to two separate complaints of a male driving a vehicle in an erratic manner on May 20 at Oak and South Streets an on May 25 in the 400 block of N. Chestnut Street, warrants have been issued charging Johnny Lee Roe, II, address unknown, with two counts of failure to have a valid driver’s license*. Pursuant to an investigation initiated on June 2, in the 100 block of Lincoln Place warrants have been issued charging Brian Lee Berns, 56, of Jefferson with harassment – third degree (simple misdemeanor) and disorderly conduct (simple misdemeanor). Warrants were also issued charging Dennis Blum, 63, of Jefferson with harassment – third degree (simple misdemeanor) and disorderly conduct (simple Misdemeanor)*. Pursuant to a complaint of juveniles shooting an Air Soft gun towards the Lincoln Building on June 4, Kyle Rysavy, 15, and Christopher Hulburt, 16, both of Jefferson, have been charged with curfew violation*.
Saturday, June 7: At 11:26 pm a complainant reported a vehicle had struck her residence in the 300 block of N. Wilson Street and had left going northbound. An officer located the vehicle at Sparky’s One Stop. Charlien Grife was cited for failure to maintain control. Damage to the house was estimated at $200. The 2005 Dodge Caravan Grifebwas driving sustained an estimated $1,000 in damage.
Friday, June 6: At 1:47 pm a complainant reported a female had used his debit card without his permission. The complainant was referred to the Ogden police department as that is where the offense occurred. At 6:27 pm a complainant in the 200 block of W. Adams St reported receiving a harassing phone call. At 7:59 pm a complainant reported a domestic disturbance taking place in the 1100 block of N. Maple Street. Denise Specht, 55, of Jefferson, was arrested and charged with domestic abuse assault (simple misdemeanor), interference with official acts (simple misdemeanor), driving while suspended (simple misdemeanor), and failure to refile SR-22 insurance*. Specht was booked into Greene County jail.
Thursday, June 5: At 9:32 am a complainant reported criminal mischief and trespass in a yard in the 400 block of N. Pinet Street. The complainant reported a neighbor had sprayed a solution over the lot line on her yard. At 2:31 pm a complainant reported criminal mischief to the siding on a garage in the 400 block of N. Pinet Street.
Wednesday, June 4: At 9:31 pm the Boone police department forwarded an alleged complaint of the abuse of a 5 year old female to an officer that would have taken place at a residence in Jefferson. The incident remains under investigation at this time. At 10:20 pm an officer was advised of fireworks being set off in the 300 block of W. McKinley St. The resident was warned that the activity was illegal. At 11:11 pm a complainant reported a juvenile shooting a BB gun in the direction of the Lincoln Building in the 100 block of E. Lincoln Way. A sheriff’s deputy handled the complaint as the officer was busy at the time.
Tuesday, June 3: Pursuant to the investigation of a reported assault that occurred on May 24, at Casey’s General Store (E. Lincoln Way), a warrant has been issued charging Benjamin Herridge, 39, of Jefferson, with assault- simple*.
Monday, June 2: At 8:42 am a female complainant reported being approached by a male in the 400 block of W. Lincoln Way who asked her if she needed a ride. The officer is following up on the complaint. At 11:14 am a complainant reported her granddaughter had been assaulted at a residence in the 200 block of S. Maple Street. The officer is investigating the incident. At 1:50 pm a complainant reported the theft of personal records May 20 from outside an apartment at 1000 W. Adams. At 7 pm a complainant reported the theft of a 50CC Yamaha Youth dirt bike from a storage unit at 408 E. Hwy. 30. At 8:07 pm an officer was advised of kids lighting off bottle rockets at Paul Nally Park on N. Olive St. The boys had left the park but were located at their homes and warned by the officer. At 10:18 pm a complainant reported harassment occurring at a residence in the 1100 block of W. Lincoln Way. The incident remains under investigation at this time. Pursuant to an investigation initiated on May 11 of the theft of cans from the donation bin at the Redemption Center, a warrant has been issued charging Scott Allan Bradley, 40, of Jefferson, with theft – 5th degree*.
June 1: At 1:19 am a traffic stop in the 500 block of S. Elm Street for a window tint violation resulted in the officer arresting Brock Stoner, 25, of Jefferson, for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence (OWI) – first offense* and dark windows. At 11:40 pm a complainant reported harassment at a residence in the 1100 block of McDuffie Drive. The incident remains under investigation.
